Breakdown

  • A Blasphemous dev credits Larian Studios for helping fund the game
  • The Kickstarter launched in 2017
  • Blasphemous was so successful it spawned a successful sequel

The Blasphemous games are incredible side-scrolling titles that give fans a good mix of Castlevania and Dark Souls, making them a must-play for hardcore gamers. Now we know that Baldur’s Gate 3 devs Larian Studios helped make the first game happen, donating a decent sum to the violent title’s Kickstarter.

Enrique Colinet, the lead level designer for both games, thanked Larian Studios for donating a large sum when the first entry was still on Kickstarter. While Colinet didn’t reveal the amount that Larian donated, the developer did say that it was a four-figure sum, which is impressive.

Blasphemous went to Kickstarter back in 2017 and quickly gained a ton of traction, thanks to its lovely 2D visuals and visceral gameplay. Knowing that Larian Studios helped make this game happen warms the soul, since the devs were still working on Baldur’s Gate 3 at the time.

Needless to say, the Kickstarter paid off as fans quickly fell in love with the first game for all the reasons we listed above. While this game didn’t reinvent the wheel, the fact that it looked amazing and played so well was enough to win gamers over. Its darker themes might be too much for some players, but those willing to question their faith were rewarded with excellent gameplay.

Fans were in luck as they were eventually blessed with Blasphemous 2, an excellent sequel that retained the beautiful pixel art style and brutally difficult gameplay. Since this was a sequel, the game didn’t make the same impact, though many fans still adored the second title.

Larian Studios are doing pretty well after the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, as the company plans on releasing an original IP next. The company won’t be making a sequel to BG3, nor will they make DLC, though they did float that idea around for a bit.

Blasphemous and Blasphemous 2 are readily available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
