Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to show just how ambitious Larian Studios is with this RPG. As if having 170+ hours of cutscenes wasn’t enough, the game also has one of the most extensive character creators we’ve ever seen.
Lead character artist Alena Dubrovina talked with Kotaku about how complex this game’s character creator is going to be. Dubrovina said Larian Studios knew how big this RPG was going to be and they needed an equivalent character creator to go with it.
Players can tell just how hard the team worked on this character creator for Baldur’s Gate 3. In the 11-minute video below, fans can see that every hairstyle and piece of jewelry is aesthetically pleasing no matter the race. Rather than use sliders to adjust faces, the game has default faces that can be adjusted with “attachments” like hair, tattoos, accessories, etc.
“So we kind of know that if a design is requested and there’s gonna be—like in a year— 100 [characters] throughout the game, it’s our job to kind of be prepared to make sure that all of those imps or at least some of those imps look unique,” Dubrovina states.
There is a significant amount of freedom here, as players can color humans green or make a blue Tiefling. However, in order to stay true to the game’s DnD roots, certain class, and race traits are still exclusive to them alone. Players will need to choose who they want to be wisely.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if they’re a dark elf or a normie human; they can have sex with bears. Even with limitations to the game here and there, the fact that there are 17,000 endings to get proves bigger can be better. Let’s just hope Larian Studios nails that landing in the end.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to PC on August 3, while the PS5 version comes out on September 6.
