PSVR 2 Vs Oculus Quest 2 - Differences, Graphics, Specs, Features, Games, Price, And Which Is Better

PSVR 2 vs Oculus Quest 2: Differences, Graphics, Specs, Features, Games, Price, And Which Is Better

Will PSVR 2 vs Oculus Quest 2 become the new Xbox vs PlayStation? Or the next Apple vs Android? It's too early to say. But with the backing of Sony and Facebook alongside the growing VR market, this could easily become a divisive point for gamers.

So, with the PSVR 2 headset set to launch in February 2023, it's time to pick a side. Sony has just announced further details about PSVR 2, giving us much greater insight into what it offers. And, crucially, how this compares to the Oculus Quest 2.

Here's a rundown of the differences and similarities between the PSVR 2 and Oculus Quest 2, alongside our recommendations.

PSVR 2 Vs Oculus Quest 2: Specs And Graphics

The Oculus Quest 2 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 CPU and 6GB of RAM. It supports 1832 x 1920px per eye via an LCD screen, which can run up to 120Hz in its experimental mode (90Hz is the current default setting).

Sony has confirmed that the display is 2000 x 2040 resolution per eye. This is on an OLED display capable of 4K HDR. It has a refresh rate of 90Hz and 120Hz. This certainly suggests an advantage in terms of the sharpness of the display.

As for the power, we know that the PSVR 2 will run exclusively on the PS5 via a single cord. The wired tether may deter some who are more used to the freedom given by the Quest 2, but it has its benefits. Given the PS5's immense processing power, featuring 16GB of GDDR6 RAM on a custom AMD Zen 2 GPU, it will likely outperform the Quest 2 in terms of sheer power.

This could mean the PSVR 2 can run VR games with higher system requirements, such as Half-Life: Alyx. However, as the Oculus Quest 2 can also connect to a PC (wired or wireless) to stream these games, it can match the PSVR 2 if necessary.

PSVR 2 Vs Oculus Quest 2: Price

The Oculus Quest 2 costs £299/$299 for its 64GB model and £399/$399 for its 256GB model. This is widely seen as one of the most affordable VR headsets on the market. The Valve Index for comparison costs £919 for the whole kit.

Sony revealed that the PSVR 2 kit that includes the PSVR 2 headset, PSVR 2 Sense controllers and stereo headphones will cost $549.99/£529.99. However, you'll also need a PS5 to use the headset, adding around $500 to the cost.

Apparently, Sony's PSVR 2 is pretty much more expensive than the Quest 2, but here's how Sony might justify the price...

PSVR 2 Vs Oculus Quest 2: Features

The Oculus Quest line of VR headsets brought in a range of unique features that have revolutionised the way people use VR. Sony will likely want to adopt some of the features of its own VR headset.

The most striking similarity comes in the PSVR 2's controllers, which will adopt a similar design to that of the Oculus Quest 2. Featuring what Sony describes as an "orb shape", this circular design bears resemblance to the Oculus Quest 2's Touch controllers. Both controllers also feature finger tracking.

However, the PSVR 2 controllers will further build on this, implementing the Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers found on the DualSense controller. These features have been widely praised by PS5 owners. We'd expect a significant improvement over the current PS Move controllers for the PSVR. The controllers are pictured in black, which will please those PlayStation fans who wanted a black PS5 and black PS5 controller. Interestingly, the headset itself will also feature feedback via a single in-built motor. So for example, players will be aware when a character has an elevated pulse, or feel the rush of objects passing close to the character's head.

PSVR 2 will also feature eye-tracking. This means the headset will track where you look, with the potential for this to be used as an additional input for the game character.

The tracking systems in the PSVR 2 and Quest 2 are both similar, but could also be different. Both VR headsets will track the VR controllers directly using the headset. But when it comes to other methods of tracking, they deviate. The Quest 2 uses inside-out tracking using its cameras to detect your environment and movement. This alleviates the need for an external camera setup, as required for the base PSVR system. Sony has confirmed that tracking will be done via inside-out tracking, negating the need for an external camera.

PSVR 2 Vs Oculus Quest 2: Games

When it comes down to it, the most important aspect of any gaming device - whether a console or VR headset - is its games.

Quest 2's library of games is pretty strong. It includes all the classic VR games that are a must-have, such as SUPERHOT, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners and Beat Saber, alongside some great exclusives.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge and The Climb 2 can only be played on Oculus devices, for example. It is lacking in running the most powerful VR games currently exclusive to PC-based VR systems (so basically Half-Life: Alyx), but this can be mitigated if you connect the Quest 2 to a PC.

The PS5 is backwards compatible, meaning it works with all the PSVR games currently available. For those who haven't used PSVR, this includes the likes of Beat Saber and SUPERHOT alongside exclusives, such as Iron Man VR and Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Hopefully, this backwards compatibility allows for these games to be played using the PSVR 2 headset. It could see the titles receive a next-gen upgrade, too.

It's also likely that Sony will launch its PSVR 2 headset with some pretty stellar exclusives, similar to the PS4 and PS5. The company has made its first announcement in this regard; Horizon Call of the Mountain by Guerilla and Firesprite.

According to the website, games such as Resident Evil Village, Firewall Ultra, STAR WARS: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, Demeo, No man's sky photo mode and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Chapter 2: Retribution are currently in development for PSVR 2.

PSVR 2 Vs Oculus Quest 2: Our Verdict

It's still difficult to compare the two VR headsets given the current information we have on the PSVR 2. However, these are both likely to be the dominant VR headsets going into 2022 and beyond.

But, you came here for a verdict, and we'll give you one. The Quest 2, has the edge in its affordability and ease of access. So it remains our recommendation for those first jumping into VR gaming who don't want to splash out too much. For the more hardcore VR veterans, the PSVR 2 is the inevitable next step up in VR that will likely include a robust selection of exclusives. As long as you already have a PS5, that is.

Finally, Facebook has already confirmed it is currently developing the Oculus Quest 3 and Oculus Quest 4. So you might also want to hold off on the Quest 2 in case a successor comes along.
