The Oculus Quest 2 VR headset has sold more units than all previous Oculus headsets, according to Facebook's Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth.
When asked by Bloomberg when VR will become mainstream, Bosworth said: "If you look a little closely, I think it’s starting to happen right now. The fact that Oculus Quest 2—in just a few months on the market—has outsold not just its predecessor, but all of its predecessors combined, is a tremendous indicator that we are now at that point where we have broken through from the early adopter crowd to an increasingly mainstream crowd."
The Oculus Quest 2 was first released in October 2020 - some four and a half years since the Oculus Rift launched in March 2016. Since then, the company has released the Oculus Go, Oculus Quest, and Oculus Rift S.
During the interview, Bosworth also briefly spoke about Facebook's wristband device for AR glasses, which he commented is "still in its research phase right now, but we're making progress."
Why is the Oculus Quest 2 so successful?
Speaking on the Quest 2's success, Bosworth highlighted the headset's price point, especially when compared to its predecessors. "When you took [the Oculus Rift's] initial price, plus it had to be attached to a pretty beefy gaming PC to even run, the total cost of ownership was almost $2000," he said.
"And now today you've got the Oculus Quest 2. And you can get this thing for $299. That's an incredible reduction of price in a relatively short period of time."
The Oculus Rift first launched for $599 in 2016, while its successor - the Rift S- cost $399.
How successful is the Oculus Quest 2?
Facebook has yet to release any official statistics on how many units the Quest 2 has sold.
However, Rec Room's Shawn Whiting has given some insight into the potential sales numbers. According to the developer, Rec Room saw one million new users in three months. By using an attach rate of 40% or lower, it could be that "the actual number is probably more like 2-3 million Quest 2s in Q4."
SuperData has given a more conservative prediction, stating that the Quest 2 has sold 1.1 million units during Q4 2020 - although this is now likely to have increased drastically as we approach the end of Q1.
