OpenAI may be at the forefront of the AI trend, but it’s certainly not the only company providing tools for users to create content or serve as personal assistants. While there’s considerable hype around OpenAI’s upcoming video generation tool, Sora, another company has beaten them to the punch.

OpenAI’s current focus is on ChatGPT-4o, partnering with iPhone creator Apple for the impressive Apple Intelligence. This leaves us still waiting for the OpenAI Sora release date, creating a gap that Luma Dream Machine is eager to fill.

Unlike the best AI chatbots, Luma Dream Machine is a new video generation tool that allows you to input a text prompt and get a fully AI-generated clip within minutes. Luma’s promotional materials are seriously impressive, but our testing revealed that the generated videos are quite uncanny.

For example, when we used the prompt “A man playing guitar while eating roast chicken,” the results were as terrifying as they were intriguing. Pushing the tool further, we tried the prompt “A young boy walks across a dying grass field; a camera pans over his head to reveal an alien spaceship coming to abduct him.” The outcome was stiff and unnatural, reminiscent of the upcoming AI-generated romcom that looks equally dreadful.

That’s not to say it’s not a clever tool. The ability to generate AI videos in moments is exciting, even if the results are currently unappealing. However, there’s concern that tools like Luma Dream Machine could be misused, as seen when people created a disrespectful George Carlin special or sold AI-generated celebrity nudes on eBay.

The best AI image generation tools still struggle to produce content that great artists can create with ease, so AI video tools have a long way to go before they can generate lifelike content. OpenAI seems to be making a wise choice by taking its time to perfect Sora, especially with the addition of a waitlist to manage the tool's usage. However, it’s clear we have a long way to go before these tools become reliable and produce high-quality results.
