Despite launching back in 2020, BeReal experienced a massive surge in popularity around 2022. However, the intriguing premise didn't keep many users hooked, and with the audience dwindling every year, the developers of the social media app have now sold BeReal to a well-known mobile games publisher.

While BeReal was once considered one of the best apps for iPhone and best apps for Android for a few months, its popularity didn't last long. According to The Verge, BeReal's user base declined from 15 million monthly users in late 2022 to 6 million monthly users by March 2023.

Of course, many people still look forward to the BeReal time each day, but many have dropped off. Nonetheless, the mobile games publisher Voodoo still believes in the potential of the social media app. The French company has acquired BeReal for a staggering €500 million.

According to the press release announcing the acquisition, Voodoo aims to diversify into communication apps, and the purchase of BeReal is a key part of that strategy. Interestingly, Voodoo claims that BeReal's user base has not only been stable but has actually grown to 40 million active users, half of whom use the app at least six days a week.

Voodoo has no plans to let BeReal fade away. As part of the acquisition, Voodoo promises that the company "is uniquely positioned to help BeReal unlock its full potential as a next-generation social platform. Voodoo will actively support BeReal in accelerating product development and user growth, leveraging a decade of experience in building and growing iconic mobile products."

Voodoo intends to "further invest in BeReal while providing its expertise in product strategy, growth, and infrastructure." Voodoo's CEO, Alexandre Yazdi, added, "BeReal has achieved incredible user loyalty and growth, demonstrating a universal desire to share real, unfiltered experiences with close friends."

BeReal isn't going anywhere soon, and it actually seems to have a stronger chance of growing under Voodoo's management. If you've been waiting for a time to dive into BeReal, be sure to check out our BeReal beginners guide to get the best start on the social media app.
