Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy is a magnificently well-casted series of movies. From Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker to Willem DaFoe as Green Goblin, many of the Raimi-casted actors have become inseparable from their roles. One of these as Bruce Campbell as... Well, it's complicated.
Starring in a cameo role in every Raimi movie since The Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell starred in multiple roles in the director's Spider-Man movies. From a wrestling commentator to a theatre doorman to a restaurant maître d', the actor constantly pops up. However, as it turns out, Campbell’s character was planned to be Mysterio in the cancelled fourth entry.
Bruce Campbell will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Reported by CBM, Campbell has confirmed his appearance in Sam Raimi’s upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. With the upcoming movie described as the ultimate celebration of Marvel, the film is expected to be filled with myriad cameos.
From a new version of Iron Man to Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier, Doctor Strange 2 will be a treasure trove for fans? But where does Bruce Campbell fit into the cameo-filled movie, and just who does the actor play?
According to the actor, he has indeed filmed a scene for the upcoming movie. However, it's not clear if he's reprising his role as Mysterio or if he's playing someone else entirely. The actor explained the situation:
"The deal with Doctor Strange is interesting. A majority of the film was reshot extensively, so I have no idea what's in there and what isn’t. I did a cool scene with a character that's been beloved for years, and...we’ll have to see what ends up in the movie. I don’t know if it's still in there. It's a pretty cool part."
Please be Mysterio
The ideal scene for Bruce Campbell in the eyes of Marvel fans would likely be for the actor to finally turn up in his canned Mysterio outfit. While designs for the actor in the suit have made their way online, we've never been able to see them on screen.
Unfortunately, Campbell might not play the role of Mysterio at all in the upcoming movie. Recent leaks have claimed that the actor will instead be playing a version of Thor’s brother, Balder. However, there's no knowing how that character will even fit into the movie.
Additionally, the actor’s description of his role being a “beloved” character would likely mean that he was playing someone substantial. No offence to Balder fans, but the appearance of Thor’s brother isn't exactly a revolutionary moment in a Doctor Strange movie.
