Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 greenlit after unprecedented viewer numbers

The ongoing Obi-Wan Kenobi show on Disney Plus was supposed to be one last hurrah for Ewan McGregor. While the actor has said that he would love to play the character again, the story was pitched as a one and done.

However, with an unprecedented number of fans flocking to Disney Plus to watch the new series, Disney and Lucasfilm appear to have changed their minds. So, is there going to be an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2?

Will there be an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2?

Revealed in a very spoilery report by MakingStarWars do not read if you don’t want the rest of the season spoiled for you — sources at Lucasfilm are pushing for a second season. With strong critical reception and unprecedented viewer numbers, the company is reportedly fighting for more seasons.

The report explains that Lucasfilm is in the early stages of Season 2, drafting out the next storyline in a way that doesn’t harm Star Wars canon. However, it’s not known if Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 will be a direct continuation of the current season’s story.

Instead, Lucasfilm might pitch the next season as a different show with Obi-Wan still in a lead role. With the character being an important part of the early Rebel Alliance, we could see the character make a stand against the Empire.

After all, we’ve still got a while before Ewan McGregor starts to look like Alec Guinness’ original Obi-Wan. With this in mind, Lucasfilm could get a lot of mileage out of the actor in the future.

How many seasons well there be?

At the time of writing, the only live action Star Wars show to have multiple seasons is The Mandalorian. Instead of full seasons-long shows, Disney seems more interested in limited run events. It makes sense: limited run series will drive more initial viewers.

On the other hand, The Mandalorian’s runaway success shows that Disney does like numerous seasons. In fact, that show has already had its fourth season announced as well as an upcoming MandoVerse event.

With this in mind, Obi-Wan Kenobi could last a few seasons. Depending on fan attention, it could end up being even longer than The Mandalorian. It all depends on what Lucasfilm and Ewan McGregor want to do.
