Here’s how to download the latest PlayStation 5 firmware update

The PlayStation 5 launched with its fair share of bugs, issues, and crashes. However, it’s likely that Sony was well prepared for such issues to arise, and has a team consistently working on various patches to resolve some of these errors.

Following the PS5’s firmware update in November, Sony has now released another update ahead of Christmas that should hopefully lead to a more stable next-gen experience for those lucky enough to have secured a PlayStation 5.

PS5 firmware update patch notes

As with most PlayStation updates, the patch notes are once again pretty vague. However, Sony’s iconic line of “This system software update improves system performance” is joined by a few other notes, giving us at least some insight into the new update’s purpose.

PS5Update
Hello, old friend…

The full patch notes are as follows:

  • This system software update improves system performance.
  • Resolved an issue where data transfers and downloads were cancelled when trying to download content while a data transfer from a PS4 is in progress.
  • Some issues that were causing errors during text input in some PS4 games have been resolved.
  • The connection stability has been improved for some Wi-Fi routers.

This update also includes an update to the PS5’s DualSense controller, with the console prompting owners to connect the controller to the PS5 via USB to download “a new version of the wireless controller device software” before jumping back into your games.

We won’t know the full impact of these patches until reports of PS5 issue fixes start to come in, but we’re hoping some of the various crashes that we’ve experienced may occur less frequently now.

How to download PS5 update 20.02-02.30.00

As with most updates now, the download for the latest PS5 firmware should start automatically, in which case you can select in from your downloads and begin the installation process.

Once the installation has completed, once you turn on your controller, you will be prompted to connect your DualSense to download the latest software update, although this won’t force a restart of your console.

If your console did not automatically download the latest update, you can go to System Settings and select the System Software Settings and Updates tab. Here you can manually search for a software update and turn on automatic software update downloads.

If your controller doesn’t update when you first turn it on, you can try this again by restarting the controller. If you want to see if you have the latest DualSense update, you can check in the Controller Settings, where the software version should be 0210.
