Ubisoft’s long-anticipated open world Star Wars game is still without a name, but the upcoming sci-fi adventure does have a release window.
Ubisoft’s debut entry in the long-running movie franchise is allegedly scheduled for next year. According to a Kotaku report, the French publisher is gearing up to reveal and release their new game.
The report reveals that Ubisoft’s open world Star Wars game is being fast-tracked to release following a rough period for the company. With the game studio reporting record losses after a long period of delays and cancellations, Star Wars joins Avatar and a new Assassin’s Creed as Ubisoft’s next big bet.
Over the past few years, Ubisoft has been forced to delay its pirate adventure game Skull and Bones numerous times. Furthermore, the company has indefinitely delayed its Prince of Persia remake despite being fully complete.
Kotaku’s report claims that Ubisoft’s open world Star Wars game still isn’t where it needs to be, but the game may be released in early 2024 anyways. After a shockingly poor year with only two medium-sized releases, Ubisoft may have to release the game in a rushed state.
Currently, not many details are known about the new open world Star Wars game. However, the game is expected to have interplanetary travel between numerous fictional star systems.
There is hope that the new game will take advantage of the planet-to-galaxy system shown off in Ubisoft’s cancelled Beyond Good and Evil 2. However, considering the complexity of those systems, that may not be the case.
Ubisoft is expected to go hard on new game releases this year. At the end of the year, the game studio is expected to release Assassin’s Creed Mirage, a short-form linear game in the series as well as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Alongside its Star Wars and Avatar games, Ubisoft is heavily focused on massively ramping up their Assassin’s Creed output, threatening to bring back the series’ 7th-gen fatigue.
Ubisoft has certainly had a rough time coming into the latest generation of consoles. While Xbox Series and PS5 launch title Watch_Dogs Legion performed quite well, it and Far Cry 6 have not been huge sellers.
