As you begin your adventures in Enshrouded, you have to find and create many different materials, and one of them is Charcoal. To start the journey, you only need to walk a little north from the starting location, where you can free Oswald Anders, a skilled Blacksmith. This NPC will tell you how to get Charcoal in Enshrouded, and you will use this knowledge to create a Forge for him.
However, first, you must find the previously mentioned NPC, create a small Charcoal Kiln, and collect the necessary ingredients. Of course, it won't take too much time, but we will guide you along this path to make the process as straightforward as possible.

How to build Charcoal Kiln in Enshrouded
As we said earlier, you need to go north from the starting location and find the Ancient Vault of this NPC. The location is a little further than the first Flame Altar, so continue north until you climb a narrow path into a grassy clearing. Once you get to this place, you must defeat several scavenger enemies and another one inside the Ancient Vault. And once you overcome all these difficulties, you will be able to free Oswald Anders from the pod.
After completing these steps, you can return to your base and use the Summoning Staff to summon the Blacksmith NPC. And once you do this, you will have the Charcoal Kiln recipe unlocked. To create this primitive structure, you only need 20 Stones and Workbench. Fortunately, you can get Stones by collecting them near your base. As for the Charcoal Kiln, once the creation process is complete, you can place it anywhere in your base.
How to craft Charcoal in Enshrouded
To craft Charcoal in Enshrouded, you must use the Charcoal Kiln and collect the following materials:
- x17 Wood Logs. You can get this material by collecting branches on the ground near the trees. Or you can get it by cutting down trees with your ax or even your hands.
- x3 Dirt. As for Dirt, you can get it by simply digging anywhere with the Scrappy Pickaxe. In turn, to craft a pickaxe, you must collect 8 Metal Scraps and 1 Shroud Wood.
Once you have collected all the required materials, put them in the Charcoal Kiln and wait 5 minutes. When the timer ends, you will receive 15 Charcoal.
How to use Charcoal in Enshrouded
As you progress in Enshrouded, you will need a lot of Charcoal for many purposes. For example, you will need 2 Charcoal and 2 Metal Scraps to craft Metal Sheets. In turn, this material will be useful to you throughout the game, both for crafting weapons and armour, as well as for building.
However, when you first get Charcoal, you should use it to create a Forge. This structure will unlock a lot of new recipes for you, but you will have to collect a few more ingredients:
- x10 Charcoal
- x30 Stone
- x10 Metal Scraps
- x12 Wood Logs
