Harley Quinn is the “catalyst of chaos" in The Suicide Squad, says Robbie

Margot Robbie has explained the role of Harley Quinn in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. As usual, the character will be providing most of the hectic chaotic energy in the movie. That's right, business is usual for Robbie's portrayal of Quinn.

How Harley Quinn provides chaos in The Suicide Squad

In an interview with Total Film, Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie explained how the character “erupts" the movie’s plot. Despite her importance to the plot, she's not necessarily the driving force of the movie. However, major events will happen due to the character's chaotic nature.

“One of the first things I said to James was, I think Harley is a catalyst of chaos," Robbie told the outlet. "She’s not necessarily your narrative center, and sometimes it’s great when plot points can rest on other characters’ shoulders, and she can be the thing that erupts a whole sequence of events. That’s something I felt he agreed with, based on what I was reading in the script.

Following Birds of Prey, fans wonder how the character has gone from that story back into The Suicide Squad. Robbie explains that the character is still chaotic and evolves depending on the director.

"[In terms of] how she’s changed, it’s just always interesting to explore what characteristics different directors gravitate towards from the character," the actress added. "The common denominator is the source material, which is what I always built the character off anyway. Then she evolves in different ways under different people’s direction."

What will the character do after The Suicide Squad?

With The Suicide Squad being the last announced appearance of Harley Quinn, we wonder what's next for the character. Despite Birds of Prey being an amazing DC movie, underwhelming box office performance means a sequel is unlikely. While there aren't currently plans for a Birds of Prey 2, it would be a great opportunity to give the character more screen time.

If plans for Zack Snyder’s Justice League trilogy do somehow end up going ahead, the character may not be around for long. As seen at the end of the Snyder Cut, Harley Quinn does end up dying in Batman's arms sometime in the planned second/third movie.

The Suicide Squad releases on July 30th in cinemas and on HBO Max.
