PS5 1440p: Can the PlayStation 5 run 1440p?

As we fast approach the start of the next generation of consoles, many gamers are considering whether to upgrade their basic 1080p monitor or TV to make use of the new console's graphical capabilities.

While much has been made of both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X's 4K capabilities, those with a 1440p monitor are curious as to how their mid-tier product will support the PS5.

Well, Sony remained pretty vague on the PS5's 1440p for a while, but we've finally got confirmation of 1440p's fate...

Does the PS5 support 1440p?

According to reports from IGN Italy, the PlayStation 5 will not support 1440p output. This detail was "confirmed directly by Sony to our editorial team during the day today," said Salvatore Cardone of IGN Italy, in a translation of the original article.

This comes just days before the launch of both next-gen consoles. The Xbox Series X and Series S consoles will both support the 1440p/Quad HD resolution, with this being the max resolution of the budget next-gen Xbox console.

The PlayStation 4 Pro also did not support 1440p output when it released in 2016, instead giving its users the choice between upscaled 1080p or 4K.

With 1440p out of the picture, it appears that the PlayStation 5 will instead support either 1080p or 4K output.

So how does this lack of support for 1440p affect gamers? Well, if you play your games exclusively on TVs rather than on monitors, this won't really matter to you as most TVs output either in 1080p or 4K, which could perhaps be the reason Sony decided to skip 1440p support.

In any case, if you were thinking of uprading your 1080p TV or monitor as the next-gen rolls in, we'd recommend looking at a 4K TV instead. You can check out our suggestions below...
