Metaverse University opened in Tokyo to create virtual worlds

Corporations banking on the metaverse being the future of consumerism, and everyone wants a piece of the pie. In a surprising move, The University of Tokyo has announced that they will be opening metaverse courses soon, with both high schoolers and adults being eligible to take the courses.

Study the metaverse while in the metaverse

The Asahi Shimbun (via Cointelegraph) revealed that the metaverse university will be available later this year at The University of Tokyo. Currently, the metaverse courses won’t have their own facility but will be under Todai’s faculty of engineering and engineering-related graduate schools. Students that end up finishing these will get a certificate proving that they’ve finished the course.

High-school and junior-high students will get introductions to the metaverse space, learning about potential roadmaps that can lead to careers in engineering, science, and other similar fields. Since these students are younger, the lessons will be a mix of face-to-face and online sessions.

As of this writing, there has been no mention of NFTs and cryptocurrency, though it’s likely a matter of time before they come into play. Usually, anything metaverse-related means that there will have to be some obligatory NFT or crypto payment scheme. While some companies have tried to steer away from them, investing in the metaverse will likely reel them back.

Why have a metaverse course?

Many might be wondering why The University of Tokyo should make a metaverse university since the platform hasn’t really impacted society, at least not yet. Apparently, this is to address the lack of people who have skills in “digital transformation” and “advanced technologies” if Todai is to be believed.

Officials at The University of Tokyo also feel that having metaverse courses will lead to a situation where anyone, regardless of their age, gender, or social standing, can soon learn engineering and information science. We’ll have to wait and see if this will actually materialize in a lot of students attending the course but it is an interesting sales pitch if nothing else.
