Mark Zuckerberg’s tech giant Meta has received a brand new lawsuit for Its colossal collection. Following the company’s swift rebrand from Facebook, a number of additional legal battles have occurred, mostly down to the company’s name.
As it turns out Meta is not an original name. Coming from the company’s new focus on the Metaverse, it would appear that the Facebook company didn’t bother to check if other companies shared that name. They do, and they’re not happy.
Meta sued by another Meta
Announced on Tuesday, VR company META has filed a lawsuit against the tech giant company of the same name. According to the lawsuit, Zuckerberg’s company rebrand has not only violated the smaller company’s trademark, but also harmed its brand.
The original company claims that it has gone by that moniker for the past dozen years. Furthermore, the company has spent the last eight months attempting to talk the Zuckerberg company into abandoning its rebrand.
“On October 28, 2021, Facebook seized our META mark and name, which we put our blood, sweat, and tears into building for over twelve years,” The company announced. “Today, after eight months of trying to negotiate with Facebook in good faith to no avail, we were left with no choice but to file a lawsuit against them.”
The smaller company claims that customers are less likely to work with them due to the link to Zuckerberg’s company. It claims that the company’s “toxicity” has run off into them. They explain:
“[We] can no longer provide goods and services under the META mark because consumers are likely to mistakenly believe that Meta’s goods and services emanate from Facebook and that Meta is associated with the toxicity that is inextricably linked with Facebook.”
Who will win?
The smaller Meta may have the upper hand in the right to its trademark. However, taking on a gigantic company at the scale of Zuckerberg’s empire is never an easy task. In fact, for many smaller companies, it’s damn near impossible.
With this in mind, Zuckerberg’s company will likely keep the Meta name. However, it would be rather humorous to see the tech giant’s massive rebrand start all over again. Would they just revert to Facebook? Or bring back the Oculus name? Oculus was cool.
