Depending on who you ask, Todd Phillips’ Joker was a groundbreaking movie that used DC’s iconic villain in a brilliant way or an overrated film that tried too hard to be sad and serious. Regardless of how you feel about it, Joker's impact has led to a sequel: Joker: Foile á Deux.

Joker: Folie a Deux

On Instagram, Director Todd Phillips revealed that the long-rumoured Joker sequel is on the way. Titled Joker: Folie a Deux, the film will be written by Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver, just like the original.

The Instagram post also reveals Joker star Joaquin Phoenix reading the script, which seems to confirm the actor’s return to the role. However, no other recurring characters were announced for the sequel.

It’s a bit surprising to see Joker get a sequel as the original film was a self-contained tale. There are a few plot threads that the follow-up can base itself on, but it's an odd decision to say the least.

On the other hand, considering the success of Joker, a sequel was bound to happen. As one of DC's best performing movies of all time, Warner Bros would never turn a sequel down. It’s still an odd choice, but if American Psycho can get a sequel, why can't Joker?

Will Joker 2 introduce Batman or Harley Quinn?

Details on the movie have yet to be shared, though it’s worth noting that the sequel’s title, Folie a Deux, roughly translates to “shared madness.” Considering that translation, this could mean that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will have “shared madness” with someone.

As most comic book readers know, the two most prominent characters who have “shared madness” with Joker are Batman and Harley Quinn. Additionally, the storyline could adapt The Three Jokers storyline from the comics.

It’s worth noting that Joker did introduce a version of Bruce Wayne in its universe, though the character is still a child. Introducing a new version of Batman would be intriguing but it doesn’t seem likely since The Batman has been greenlit for a sequel. Then again, The Batman is also introducing its own version of Joker so maybe anything goes?

Harley Quinn seems more likely since the two characters are always linked in some way or another. While the current version of Harley Quinn has steered away from Joker and is now more of an anti-hero, Joker is an all-new universe that can give us a slightly different take on their relationship.

Joker: Folie a Deux release date

No release window for Joker: Folie a Deux has been announced, as of this article. However, considering how quick the turnaround was on the original film, it might be ouout as soon as early 2023. After all, there's not much CGI needed for this type of film.
