Yakuza actor reveals his unique method acting for SEGA’s action series

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was a perfect soft reboot of the franchise, with many fans enjoying the new battle system and characters. Lead character Ichiban Kasuga was able to win everyone over in the English and Japanese dub, with English VA Kaiji Tang particularly bringing his all to the character.

Kaiji Tang is a pretty big VA these days, also voicing Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen and Jin Kazama in Tekken: Bloodline, among other projects. Naturally, fans really enjoyed listening to him as Ichiban when they played this SEGA JRPG and they’re curious as to what Tang did in preparation.

As it turns out, the brilliant voice actor has developed a new method for getting into the mind of Ichihan. How does one prepare to take on the role of a man so horrendously betrayed by the Yakuza?

Hilariously, Kaiji Tang revealed on his Twitter (via Reddit) that he was eating plenty of beef bowls to get ready because he is a “dedicated method actor.” Even though the Like a Dragon sequel isn’t confirmed for a worldwide release, Tang reveals that he still occasionally eats beef bowls, which is great.

Anyone who has played Yakuza: Like a Dragon knows that they can have Ichiban eat a ton of beef bowls. Considering how Tang references this action, in particular, that speaks to how iconic beef bowls are with the game.

Despite switching to turn-based combat and changing the lead character, Yazuka: Like a Dragon was able to win over fans and critics alike. Good writing and relatable characters like Tang’s Ichiban are other reasons people like the game, along with some of the over-the-top special attacks.
