FromSoftware's Dark Souls series is known for its unwavering sense of adventure, before you end up charging head-on against challenging bosses and dying numerous deaths. However, even the hardest Dark Souls or Elden Ring boss fights can't compare to the biggest challenge of all: writing without any spelling mistakes.

If you're as excited about the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree release date as we are, you’re probably thinking about that dreaded Dark Souls run-through you've been putting off. Fortunately, you don't need a PS5 Pro or a new mid-gen Xbox refresh to play this Dark Souls-style game. However, you might need to pick up one of the best keyboards on the market.

Developed by Steven Nass and Peter Henningsen, FromSoft Word is a Dark Souls-inspired indie game where the biggest challenge is spelling things correctly. There’s no autocorrect and no red lines to indicate a misspelled word. Instead, you must ensure you spell everything correctly to avoid the terrifying “You Made a Typo” screen, reminiscent of the familiar “You Died” pop-up.

Unfortunately, there are a few minor issues that we hope get patched. For instance, spelling my name (Callum) is classified as a typo, and other users testing this quirky indie game have had similar problems with other words like “App” and “Grey,” though the latter is likely due to US English being used.

There are also no challenges or a time limit that ticks down if you take too long to write a word. However, it’s certainly a unique time-waster as you prepare your Elden Ring builds or wait for the Elden Ring GPU to arrive ahead of the DLC launch. As someone who has completed Elden Ring with relatively few deaths (see: fewer than 1,000 deaths), this game is definitely harder for achieving high scores.

In any case, it’s interesting to see a unique Soulslike when many others try to replicate FromSoftware's beloved gameplay. If FromSoftware decided to make a Dark Souls spin-off in the style of The Typing of the Dead, we wouldn't be opposed to it.
