Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 will allow you to freely switch between its two webheads: Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

While players knew that they would be able to play as both Spider-Man characters, it was unsure what restrictions would be in place. As it turns out, for the most part, the restrictions are rather lax.

Speaking to Eurogamer, creative director Bryan Intihar revealed that players can switch between both superheroes when they wish, outside of story moments. When you’re in the open world, character switching can be done whenever you want.

Using the power of the PS5 SSD, players will be able to press a button to switch between Peter and Miles at will. Just like GTA V, the camera will zoom out and take you to the other character, albeit in a much faster way.

“You'll be able to - in the open world - freely switch between them with a simple button press,” Intihar explained. "Being able to switch in the open world so quickly between the two characters is really, really awesome," Intihar smiled. "Just being able to pick and choose who I want to play as for a certain activity... it's been so awesome to have that feature. [It's] something we probably wouldn't have explored previously.”

However, in service of the Spider-Man 2 game’s story, missions will restrict who you can play as and when. While some missions are only for one character or the other, others do still allow you to switch whenever you want.

“We have content designed around Peter, we have content designed around Miles and we have content where you can play either,” the creative director explained.

The ability to swap heroes on the fly is exactly what fans have wanted from this superhero sequel. While there are still restrictions in place, they’re expected ones, and it’s hard to imagine a polished game where those restrictions are lifted.

Spider-Man 2 for PS5 still doesn’t have a concrete release date, but it is still scheduled for Fall. While all signs point to September, that still hasn’t been confirmed by PlayStation.
