Originally reported by StackDiary, and The Register (via PC Gamer), a website called Spy.pet is claiming to have millions of scrapped messages and profiles from the app. In addition to messages, the company also collects Discord aliases that are linked to social media and Steam.
The website also tried to hype itself up, claiming that this is a potential option for federal agents who want something new. Considering how these actions are likely breaking the law, we doubt that any actual agents will get too far if they align with this website.
Responding to the controversy, Discord has said that they will be looking into these claims, as the privacy of their users is a huge concern to them. If the website has breached their security, we imagine that major legal ramifications will be had and things won’t look too good for Spy.pet.
"Discord is committed to protecting the privacy and data of our users. We are currently investigating this matter,” the company responded. “If we determine that violations of our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines have occurred, we will take appropriate steps to enforce our policies. We cannot provide further comments as this is an ongoing investigation."
Many gamers consider the chat app a major part of their hobby, as it tracks the games they play and lets them know what titles their friends are experiencing. The devs at Discord are even planning to add smaller games to their app, just for that small bit of variety. Hopefully, this is the last major breach the app experiences, though we’re doubtful of that.
