Pokémon Sleep is going to let you catch Shiny Pokémon in your sleep, which might make it the best app for catching these critters. The news is pretty surprising since most of us expected this to be a typical sleeping app with some fun Pokémon gimmicks.

Joe Merrick, the webmaster of Serebii.net, confirmed on Twitter that Shinies will be a part of the upcoming mobile app. Merrick then joked about streamers trying to do Shiny streams with this app, which would be funny for a month or two.

While the news is amusing, some fans don’t like it because Pokémon Sleep doesn’t have any Pokémon HOME functionality, at least not yet. HOME currently works on all of the mainline Switch titles and Pokémon GO. Sleep support could be added in the future but there’s no confirmation yet.

Shiny hunting remains a popular pastime for Pokémon fans, who continue to stream and make YouTube videos about their finds. These rare versions of normal Pokémon are really hard to find, especially in older versions of the game. For those curious, the main differences are their colors and their stats, which don’t mean much for casual play.

The fact that Pokémon Sleep is getting some Shiny Pokémon is wild, especially for an app that’s supposed to help people rest. Jokes about catching rare Pokémon while sleeping have already made their way online and we expect more of them for Shiny hunters. It will be interesting to see just how many shinies we can get from napping alone.

Pre-registration for Sleep has started for Android users, with the app reportedly coming out by the end of this month. We don’t think any diehard fans will be rushing to download this app, though it should make for some funny memes, at the very least.

Pokémon Sleep is expected to come out by the end of the month. Shiny Pokémon can also be caught in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for the Nintendo Switch.
