Crushingly difficult Pokémon Emerald rom hack Pokémon Run and Bun is driving veteran fans crazy over its absurd difficulty. Even fans who actively pursue hardcore rom hacks for a sense of challenge are finding it difficult to complete this nightmarish Pokémon game.

For those unfamiliar, Run and Bun is a difficulty rom hack for Emerald, letting fans replay this third-gen favorite with far harder foes. While difficulty hacks are nothing new to the Pokémon community, it seems that these fans went too far and made the final bosses much cheaper than usual.

One player on Reddit explained how unfair Pokémon Run and Bun makes three specific areas: Mt. Pyre, Magma Hideout, and Aqua Hideout. Apparently, even for someone who likes a good challenge, this fan felt that it was unfair how these areas had unlimited attacks and buffs via Magma Storm and Aurora Veil.

In addition to the difficulty spike, players also complained about actual good Pokémon getting deleted from the game. Gamers would have accepted this if the AI trainers couldn’t access them as well but they can, which is pretty unfair. The Pokémon in question are Rotom, Eevee, Quagsire, Skarmory, among other reliable critters.

As if all of that wasn’t enough to complain about, Pokémon Run and Bun also have some pretty contrived mechanics. Granted, these rom hacks are meant to make the game harder than the original GBA title but limiting items and letting Dark-type Pokémon take them is a step too far.

Despite all of these complaints, we’re sure fans are willing to try this again just so they can beat the game once and for all. It’s the Kaizo lifestyle after all, as players have been doing this for the longest time. Many will remember some of the original Kaizo Mario levels, so this should bring back memories.

We can’t tell you where to get Pokémon Run and Bun but fans should be able to find it with enough searching. For an easier experience, fans can purchase Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on the Nintendo Switch right now.
