James Gunn wanted to make a Batman or Krypto movie

As soon as James Gunn was fired from Marvel back in 2017, DC quickly snatched up the director for a new movie. Eventually, Gunn's film was revealed to be The Suicide Squad, a sequel/reboot of 2016's Suicide Squad.

However, The Suicide Squad wasn't the only DC movie that the director wished to make. While the ensemble DC film perfectly fits the director’s previous large-group projects (Scooby Doo and Guardians of the Galaxy), his thoughts turned to something more singular.

James Gunn would've done Batman

In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn explained that definitely didn't want to make a Superman movie. However, the director explained that he feels he could've made a good Batman movie. Of course, that would be if Matt Reeves wasn’t already making one.

He explained:

“I’m not saying I’d never be interested in Superman, but if it was Batman, which Matt [Reeves] was already doing, it might’ve felt differently because I understand Batman. I understand Harley Quinn; I don’t understand every character.”

Krypto the Superdog movie

Gunn might not be interested in creating a Superman, but he is interested in something Superman adjacent. That's right, the Guardians of the Galaxy director was interested in making a movie based on Krypto the Superdog.

The director explained that the movie would've been comedic in nature. While Krypto would've been the focus, Superman would've been involved with the storyline. He said:

“I considered doing a Krypto movie which I thought would be really fun, but that shows you where my head’s at. I wasn’t interested in doing a [traditional] Superman thing—a superpowered dog from Krypton, running around a city, destroying it, while Superman tries to track him down and get him. That seemed interesting to me.”

James Gunn is attached to direct another DC movie in the future. The director could be signed on to create another Suicide Squad movie. However, it would be more interesting to see this hilarious Krypto movie.
