Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 writer has turned his complete focus to the studio’s next superhero adventure: Marvel’s Wolverine.
Announced alongside Spider-Man 2 at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac’s Wolverine game is expected to be an incredibly violent open-world action game on PlayStation 5, but not much else is known about the game.
Insomniac Games has remained silent about the new superhero game since its reveal, but Spider-Man 2 writer Nick Foltman has officially joined the game’s team to finish up its story.
The upcoming Wolverine has been actively in development since its reveal, complete with a lead narrative director. However, with more writers joining the project, the upcoming mutant-action game is starting its full production process.
Posting on Twitter, Folkman told fans that his work on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has officially wrapped. “Me this week,” Folkman said. “I've wrapped up my work on Spider-Man 2 and am now writing on Wolverine!”
However, this doesn’t mean that Marvel’s Wolverine is still years away. Considering Folkman has only just finished Spider-Man 2 — a game that’s release is mere months away — the writer is likely not working on secondary dialogue such as side quests, NPC dialogue and polishing up other areas.
Insomniac Games is renowned for its quick turnaround for its remarkably high-quality games. Since 2018, the studio has released Spider-Man and its DLC, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, all fantastic video games.
Previous rumours claimed that Marvel’s Wolverine would release on PlayStation 5 consoles in late 2024 or early 2025. Considering just how quick Insomniac Games is at developing titles, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the title manage to hit a 2024 release date.
Seemingly set in the same New York as the developer’s Spidey games, there is a high chance that a lot of assets will be reused for Wolverine. With this in mind, development should be somewhat quicker than starting a new title from scratch.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on October 10th, 2023. The game is expected to come to PC sometime after.
