Lucasfilm’s long-running Indiana Jones franchise is seemingly ending with Indiana Jones 5. The as-of-yet untitled action sequel looks to be franchise lead Harrison Ford’s last outing as the whip-crack hero.

With Ford presumably hanging up the fedora at the end of Indiana Jones 5, fans are wondering if the franchise will end. However, it seems that — just like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull attempted — the film will be setting up a new protagonist.

Indiana Jones 5 is setting up Harrison Ford’s replacement

Reported by the Mail Online, the new Indy flick is setting up a new hero. In the new film, Fleabag actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge reportedly plays Jones’ assistant. According to the rumours, Waller-Bridge will be hyped as the next Indiana Jones protagonist.

The Mail Online writes:

“Insiders claim Kathleen Kennedy, the Hollywood producer behind the franchise, is keen to make ‘big, bold’ changes – with few bigger than switching the lead character to a woman. It would be a huge statement, and a great role for Phoebe.”

Will this be successful?

The future of Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the Jones successor depends on the success of Indiana Jones 5. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull appeared to be setting up Shia LaBeouf as the next Indy. However, the film’s negative reception and LaBeouf’s career downfall resulted in that plan falling through.

If Waller-Bridge does take over from Ford in the future, a selection of hardcore fans will undeniably be upset. Much like any major franchise, the established fanbase won’t easily accept a new hero, even if Ford is getting too old to carry on.

The untitled Indy sequel is scheduled to release theatrically on July 29th, 2022.
