While Final Fantasy 16 sells gangbusters on PC, Square Enix’s retro collection is also performing very well. Available on multiple platforms, the Final Fantasy Pixel Collection has sold millions of copies.
Released last April, the Final Fantasy Pixel Collection includes the first six games in the long-running JRPG series. Recreated in their original forms with great English translations, the Pixel Collection is exactly what fans have been asking for.
Revealed in an announcement tweet, three million copies have been purchased across all available platforms. That includes Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mobile, although the latter does mean Square may be fudging numbers.
On mobile, the Final Fantasy Pixel Collection isn’t one package. While all six games can be bought in one huge bundle, each title is also available individually. This means that Square Enix could be counting these individual titles as sales towards the 3 million count.
Nevertheless, with Final Fantasy XVI sales in a wary position at the company, the success of the quick-and-easy Pixel Collection should be a great bonus for the company. Perhaps it could lead to even more remasters in the future?
An expanded version of the Pixel Collection would be a great move for Square Enix, adding the extra dungeons, quests and other tidbits from prior re-releases of the classic games to modern consoles. With the 20th Anniversary PSP port of the first game adding a wealth of content, it would be nice to see it in a new form.
Final Fantasy XVI developer Yoshi-P has also been keen to bring back more classic Final Fantasy content to fans of the series. Recently, the game director attempted to get the classic titles added to the Final Fantasy XIV MMO.
Square Enix is also working on a new chapter of its Final Fantasy VII Remake franchise, with the first game allegedly being retooled as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch game. With Final Fantasy XI Remake plans also being discussed, the future is bright for classic FF fans.
