A number of developers working at Japanese game behemoth Square Enix are fighting for a Final Fantasy 6 Remake project.

A recent roundtable discussion, as reported by VGC, saw numerous Square Enix staff argue for a remake of the company’s last SNES Final Fantasy RPG.

At the discussion, Final Fantasy 7 Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that creating a remake of the massive SNES RPG would be harder than many expect, even more so with the current remake project still underway.

“I think Final Fantasy 6 Remake would be difficult,” Kitase explained. “Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not yet finished, so I am not able to think about it. But there are many Final Fantasy 6 fans inside the company, and they often ask me ‘when are we making 6?’.”

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Square Enix’s iconic JRPG franchise, revealed that the company would have to do a lot more work to revive the classic SNES game if they were to remake it in the same vein as Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Sakaguchi claims that the game’s story, gameplay and narrative would all have to be completely revised to be brought to the standard of new Final Fantasy games. However, many fans would likely be more interested in a HD2D remake similar to Dragon Quest 3.

Final Fantasy 6 Remake isn’t the only remake allegedly in discussion at Square Enix. According to a number of industry insiders, Square Enix is working on a remake of Chrono Trigger, the game’s first revision since its iconic DS remake in 2009. A number of rumours have also claimed that a turn-based Final Fantasy 9 Remake is also in the works.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is also continuing with its upcoming second arc: Rebirth. The new PS5 exclusive will launch as the first game on the system to come on two discs, possibly taking up to 200GB of storage space.

The next game in the series to release is Final Fantasy XVI, another PS5 exclusive entry. Launching on June 22nd, the game is set to be the most mature entry the series has ever seen.
