Final Fantasy 14 continues to capture the imaginations of MMO fans everywhere and the fact that it’s still going strong is a testament to its quality. Due to the MMO’s success, there are no plans to make it free-to-play anytime soon, though there are plans to beef up the free trial.

Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida spoke with Eurogamer about the possibility of making this ridiculously popular MMO free in the future. Yoshida said that this wouldn’t be the case since too much time and money has been put into upcoming expansions.

"I believe the free trial will continue to be expanded, but we have no plans of making the client itself free at the moment," Yoshida said. "Since a huge amount of time and money has been invested in the expansion packages, the revenue from sales of the expansion package itself is still very important in order to continue to make expansions on this scale. We would like to constantly aim for the best on the business side as well to continue making a lot of content to be enjoyed."

The current Final Fantasy 14 free trial is pretty beefy, as players can actually reach up to Level 60 for free. Players don’t have to worry about any time limits either, as the trial will essentially last forever. Square Enix has also made two expansions an official part of the free trial: Heavensward and Stormblood.

Yoshida plans to keep updating the MMO for the foreseeable future and constantly wants to add new content. Interestingly, there was a pitch to add the Pixel Remasters as playable titles in the MMO itself. While it’s a cute idea, those remasters recently sold three million copies so we can see why Square Enix didn’t push through with it.
