Final Fantasy XVI is the ‘ultimate’ entry, says series creator

Iconic Japanese game developer and creator of Final Fantasy Hironobu Sakaguchi has shared his thoughts on the franchise’s latest entry: Final Fantasy XVI.

After months of the game being playable by fans, Sakaguchi took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the new RPG. In a short message to fans, the Final Fantasy creator praised the new entry in a way many would never have expected.

In his tweet, Sakaguchi said that Final Fantasy XVI is the “ultimate” Final Fantasy. After a decade of the series releasing underwhelming new entries, the series’ creator was fulfilled by the newest take on the iconic JRPG franchise.

Fans of the series took to gaming forum ResetEra to comment on Sakaguchi’s thoughts. Many explained that the number of call-outs to prior games in the series must have hit a note with the creator, especially near the end of the game.

Final Fantasy XVI was developed by FFXIV saviour Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P. As it so happens, Sakaguchi is also a huge supporter of Yoshida’s MMO, going so far as to speed through the MMO’s Heavensword expansion in just two days. Previously, the RPG creator took over two weeks to make his way through the game’s first expansion: A Realm Reborn.

Currently, Final Fantasy XVI is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, although a PC version will release sometime in the future. At the time of writing, Square Enix can’t decide if the new game is a sales success or not, with investors reportedly unhappy with the game’s performance, despite releasing on a single platform.

Nevertheless, the newest entry in the series has struck a chord with fans and critics. While it may not be as universally beloved as the recently released Pixel Remaster Collection, the game is still critically adored, despite its modern, DMC-like combat system.
