Elon Musk admits Tesla's self-driving software is “not great” before backpedalling

Tesla’s recent AI Day celebration was a huge self-congratulatory event for the electric vehicle company's. Hosted by self-proclaimed “Technoking” Elon Musk, the event touted the self-driving tech.

Not only did Musk use the event to further the already over-promised self-driving software, he went further. During the event, Elon Musk announced that it would be creating a full humanoid robot powered by Tesla’s FSD self-driving software. However, that proposed self-driving tech still doesn't work.

Elon Musk admits FSD doesn't quite work

In response to a fan on Twitter, Musk admitted that the current state of Tesla's FSD is far from perfect. Despite already charging $10,000 or $199-a-month for the Autopilot service, the beta software isn't ready in the slightest.

Musk explained that the “FSD Beta 9.2 is actually not great imo”. The Tesla CEO continued to explain that the “Autopilot/AI team is rallying to improve as fast as possible”. However, it would appear that it'll take a lot of time to get the software to where it needs to be.

Elon Musk revealed that the full self-driving software needs to be retrained to be able to work effectively. Not trained longer, harder or better – retrained. He said: “We’re trying to have a single stack for both highway & city streets, but it requires massive NN retraining.”

Oh, but the next one will be better!

Hours after admitting that Tesla’s FSD isn't at a good level of quality, Musk came back for damage control. Commenters were calling the Tesla owner a scam artist. One user told Musk “Maybe you should at least stop selling the product until it is better than ‘not great’. Another said, as Elon, “’Thanks for your money, suckers!”.

As the comments kept rolling, Musk responded by saying that the next update for Tesla's FSD is far better than the version he was criticising. He claimed: “Just drove FSD Beta 9.3 from Pasadena to LAX. Much improved!”
