Neil Druckmann has revealed a The Last of Us prequel that would have revealed more of Ellie’s backstory. Unfortunately a cancelled project, the prequel game would’ve revealed more about her early life and even her parents.
Speaking with Kinda Funny, Druckmann revealed that there were talks of a prequel being made, albeit not by Naughty Dog. Apparently, Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller introduced Druckmann to the studio and there were serious talks to develop the spin-off. However, it didn’t end up coming intro fruition.
Druckmann says that this prequel to The Last of Us would have dealt with Ellie’s background more and what her parents went through. Furthermore, it would have been the first time we met Ellie’s dad, who has yet to be shown in video games or the HBO show. Granted, we don’t “need” to know what happened to her parents but if done well, it could be a fascinating story.
Unfortunately, details on the studio that would have made this prequel and the type of game it would have been weren’t revealed. It would have been fascinating to see a studio like Ninja Theory work on the game since they also do well with “cinematic games” like Hellblade. Alas, it looks like we’ll never know this tale, at least not anytime soon.
Thanks to HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, we have met Ellie’s mom and she was played by none other than Ellie’s original voice actor Ashley Johnson. Many felt that it was great to see the original Ellie give birth to the “new” Ellie, which is a fun way of looking at it.
It seems that the world is going through a The Last of Us high now that the first season has ended. Prior to that, Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part 1 on PlayStation 5 to capitalize on that hype, with a PC port coming later this month.
