Steven Spielberg reportedly approached by Marvel for Fantastic Four reboot

Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a big success, with many fans and critics praising the film for having so much of Raimi’s iconic style. Keeping that acclaim in mind, Marvel Studios is rumoured to have interest in more directors that have their own signature style for Fantastic Four. But who could they pick?

Will Steven Spielberg make his MCU debut?

According to Mike Sampson, Marvel Studios had discussions with Steven Spielberg to see if he was interested in directing a new Fantastic Four movie now that Jon Watts has backed out. While Sampson does admit that he isn’t in the “scoop game” anymore, he did hear about the discussions. However, the reporter states that they didn’t go further than that.

"Ok I'm not in the scoop game anymore, but have heard that Marvel did reach out to Spielberg's team to gauge interest in directing Fantastic Four, but that's as far as the "discussions" went presumably because SS has no interest,” Sampson said.

Delving deeper into the topic, Sampson feels that the discussions didn’t go any further because Spielberg didn’t want to be micromanaged by the MCU’s signature style. Sampson also thinks that Spielberg’s upcoming film The Fabelmans could be his last, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

"Also, plenty of rumors out there that The Fablemans could be Spielberg's last, so hard to believe he'd want to sneak in a Marvel movie where he can be micromanaged by the house style"

What to expect from Fantastic Four

Marvel Studios seemingly wants their version of Fantastic Four to be huge if they want to get a Sam Raimi-level director to work on it. They even teased fans by casting Jon Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic in Multiverse of Madness, though reports have since claimed that he won’t be the main MCU Reed Richards.

Considering the legacy of Fantastic Four movies, it won’t take much for Marvel Studios to outdo the older films. Still, fans are hoping for something big and if Marvel can get Steven Spielberg for it, that would be huge.

For more Fantastic Four and Secret Wars teases, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available on the Disney+ streaming service. Marvel fans can also check out Thor: Love and Thunder in theaters.
