Spider-Punk confirmed for Spider-Verse 2 in merchandise leak

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to be huge, expanding on the stories of Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. Alongside the newly-introduced Spider-Man 2099, the movie will also have more Spider-People than ever. Fans are naturally curious about the other Spider-Men that could appear in Spider-Verse 2 and merch for the film has spoiled a beloved Spider-Verse character making their animated debut: Spider-Punk.

Are we getting (Spider) Punk’d?

Merchandise for Spider-Verse 2 was spotted by Twitter account MCU Marvels, which revealed some toys for Spider-Punk. Alongside a toy guitar - how else would you know he was a Spider-Punk? - the images also show Spider-Punk’s mask on full display, confirming the character’s appearance in Across the Spider-Verse.

For those unaware, Spider-Punk’s mask is the classic Spider-Man mask with horns on the top of his head that makes it look like a mohawk. He also wears denim jackets and sneakers with his costume, if you weren’t convinced that this spider was a punk.

Who is Spider-Punk?

Rather than just being an alternate version of Peter Parker, Spider-Punk is actually an alternate version of Hobie Brown, who most comic book readers know as The Prowler in Earth 616. Spider-Punk Hobie’s universe is more extreme than Peter Parker’s as his world has been radically taken over by corporations, rallying the lower class to fight for equality.

Prior to his upcoming appearance in Spider-Verse 2, Spider-Punk has been featured in various Spider-Verse comics. He was a prominent supporting character in the original Spider-Verse crossover, appeared in the Spider-Verse mini-series tied to Secret Wars, and was a main character in the short-lived Web Warriors series.

The character also got a five-issue mini-series this year simply called Spider-Punk, which will conclude in September. In addition to Hobie as Spider-Man, there are also punk rock versions of Hulk and Captain America.

Fans will be able to see more of Spider-Punk in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse next year, on June 2, 2023.
