While Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be the biggest celebration of Marvel yet, Sony Pictures may have it beat. With the movie studios’ upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse duology, Sony's animated webhead flick will introduce more characters than any other movie would dare.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has hundreds of characters
Via Collider's Steven Weintraub, numerous details about the upcoming Spider-Verse sequels were revealed to fans CinemaCon 2022. At a panel for the upcoming movie, it was revealed that the two-part sequel will be far bigger in scope than many imagined.
Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller told fans that the animated Marvel movie will have hundreds of characters. However, the directors didn't state whether or not those characters will have originated in prior Spider-Man material or are original versions for the movie. (Of course, it's best to assume that both will be true.)
“So @philiplord and @chrizmillr just said the #SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse has 240 characters and takes place in 6 universes and 1,000 people are working on it,” Weintraub tweeted during the panel. Attendees were then shown the first 15 minutes of the upcoming movie.
At the panel, the directors revealed that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a massive undertaking. Fandango writer Erik Davis transcribed Chris Miller saying that the duology has “the largest crew of an animated movie ever”.

Sony is betting on Spidey
The massive financial backing behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse comes amid a massive Spidey push from Sony. While the upcoming animated movie has unfortunately been delayed into 2023, fans are still more than willing to wait for the feature.
On the other hand, some fans are not as happy with Sony's other Spider-Man plans. Of course, fans are excited to see the upcoming new trilogy of Spidey movies with Tom Holland in the MCU. However, the numerous webhead villain movies — Morbius, Kraven and Madame Web — are starting to irk fans.
Nevertheless, the core Spidey output — movies that actually include Spider-Man — are well received. As long as Sony puts in the effort, fans will continue to flock to any movie involving the friendly neighbourhood superhero.
