Avengers: Endgame directors finally reveal Hulk was nerfed

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were both fantastic bookends to ten years of Marvel cinema. However, despite Avengers: Endgame offering a bunch of fan service for the original Avengers, it consistently left one behind: The Hulk.

Since the original Avengers movie in 2012, Hulk has been sidelined in the MCU. This is evident through the fact that the character was sent off into space in Age of Ultron. So, why didn’t Endgame deliver The Hulk fans wanted?

Avengers: Endgame purposefully nerfed Hulk

In a video by WIRED, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo answered internet questions about the film. Of course, this includes questions regarding their use of The Hulk.

One question asked the directorial duo: “Why do the Russo Brothers hate The Hulk?” The hilarious directors responded honestly; they had no idea what to do with him.

“Oh, we nerfed the Hulk! We nerfed him! We just didn’t know what to do with him,” said Joe Russo. “We were like, ’What, this big powerful character. What we do with this big powerful character?”

The Russo brother followed his statement up with a joking declaration: “To people who think we nerfed the Hulk? He deserved it.”

Is Hulk the strongest there is?

At one point, The Hulk was definitely the strongest Avenger. From the finale of the original Avengers movie to the Hulkbuster scene in AoU, the mean green beating machine was unstoppable.

However, as the MCU expanded, it could be said that Hulk just didn’t grow with the power crawl in the universe. Could Hulk really stand up against the likes of Scarlet Witch?

In the Wired interview, the Russo brothers touched on this point when they were asked who the strongest Avenger is. They definitively claimed: “Certainly not the Hulk.”

“We said, Wanda, at one point,” said Joe Russo Captain Marvel, another point. Thor.”

Anthony retorted, “Certainly never said it’s the Hulk.”

“Certainly not the Hulk! He’d be low on the list. Like right underneath Groo. Remember Groo the Wanderer? He’s like just below Groo the Wanderer.”
