Is your PS5 remote play controller not working?

If you've been finding yourself struggling to connect your DualSense controller to Remote Play, then this is the article for you. If you've never experienced Remote Play before, then this is also the article for you.

As a quick reminder, Remote Play is Sony's way of enabling players to access their PS4 or PS5 games, menus and home screens, on any compatible device. These need to be on the same broadband network as your console.

For example, you can start a game on your PS5, pause it, and resume it on your phone, tablet or PC. But while this sounds great in practice, it isn't so wonderful if your DualSense controller won't connect.

If you find yourself in that situation, here's what you can do about it.

How To Fix DualSense Not Connecting To Remote Play

The first thing is to make sure you are playing on a compatible device. According to Sony, the Dual Sense controller is not supported on Android devices at present. If you're on iOS, then you can only use a DualSense if you are on iOS 14.5 or higher.

What if you are on a computer? If you have Windows 10 or higher, or macOS Catalina or later, then you can use the DualSense controller. If your device isn't compatible, there's nothing else you can really do. Assuming you meet the criteria for using a DualSense controller, what can you do if it won't connect? Here are our top tips:

  • Make sure your controller isn't paired to another device. If it is, you'll need to unpair it first, before trying again.
  • If using a USB cable, make sure the cable isn't damaged. Also, make sure the port you are connecting with is also working.
  • Check that your Bluetooth connections are working. Test your controller on your PS5. And also test a different device with whatever you want to use for Remote Play.
  • Remote Play needs a minimum speed of 5 Mbps for both uploading and downloading. You can test your connection as follows:
    • Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status, and then select Test Internet Connection
    • If your network speed isn't fast enough, then you'll need to address that issue. Try restarting your router, making sure other devices aren't competing for bandwidth, and using a wired internet connection.
  • Consider uninstalling and reinstalling the Remote Play app on your device.

How To Set Up PS5 Remote Play controller?

You need to make sure that your console is set up for Remote Play in the first place. So check that your console is on, or in Rest Mode. Make sure Remote Play is enabled. And check that the system software is fully up to date. Then, the first time you use Remote play:

  • From the home screen, select Settings System Remote Play, and then turn on Enable Remote Play
  • To start Remote Play while your PS5 console is in rest mode, select Settings System Power Saving Features Available in Rest Mode. Then tick the boxes for Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

When you want to launch Remote Play on another device:

  • Turn on your console or put it into rest mode. 
  • Launch PS Remote Play on your mobile device, and then select Sign In to PSN. Sign in with the same account that you use for your console. 
  • Select PS5 or PS4. The app looks for the console that you've signed in to using your account, and then connects to the console automatically. Once connected, the screen of your console displays on your mobile device and you can start using Remote Play. If multiple consoles are found, select the console that you'd like to use.
