Playing online lets you meet new people, realise what a horrible mistake that was, and mute your mic. However, it does occasionally lead to some decent friendships, not to mention all the fun you'll have as you play.

So, here's everything you need to be able to play online multiplayer on PS4.

To do this, the first things you'll need are an internet connection and PS Plus. The second one isn't always required, but the vast majority of online features require a membership.

So, if you haven't already, click away to the PS Plus website and sign up for a membership today! Or you can sign up through your console by selecting the big yellow plus on the home page.

As long as that's all good, and your router is set up correctly, then you just need to do this:

  • Scroll right and select Settings on the home screen
  • Select Network
  • Select Set Up Internet Connection
  • Select Wi-Fi if you want to use wireless
  • Select LAN Cable if you're going to use a wired connection
  • Add the details required if you're on Wi-Fi, or make sure the LAN cable is connected if you're using a wired connection

It's also worth noting that children should probably be kept out of voice chat unless it's with their friends. The same is, unfortunately, true of anyone who isn't a white guy when it comes to a lot of online shooters thanks to the disgustingly bigoted communities that occasionally arise.
