How To Fix Chromebook Black Screen

If you've encountered a Chromebook black screen , you've come to the right place.

The black screen of death is not exclusive to the Chromebook, but is part of a wider laptop black screen issue. Even the Xbox black screen is a problem, too. With the Chromebook, absolutely nothing is displayed on the screen, and there seems no way to get to the home screen.

It's frustrating, and if you're like most people, you'll want to fix it as soon as possible. This guide will teach you how to fix a black screen on a Chromebook.

How To Fix Chromebook Black Screen

You just turn on your Chromebook and see a black screen. You may think it is probably dead. Well, that is not necessarily the case. So, what should you do now?

If you are seeing a black screen on your Asus or Acer or whatever device you own, here are a few things you can try to get it working again. We'll assume you've done the obvious and made sure it is switched on.

  • First, press the increase screen brightness button multiple times, and see if the screen turns back on.
  • If that didn't work, restart the Chromebook by holding the Power button down until the device turns off. Wai for 10 seconds and then turn it back on to see if the problem is fixed.
  • Disconnect any peripheral devices and restart your Chromebook.
  • If the issue persists, perform a Hardware Reset (EC Reset). To do that:
    • First, turn off your Chromebook.
    • Then, press and hold the Refresh button + tap the Power button.
    • When your Chromebook starts up, release the Refresh button.
  • If none of the above worked, then it's probably a hardware failure of some kind. If the Chromebook is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer for repair options. In case it is out of warranty, consult a local repair shop.

In most cases, the problem will be fixed by a simple restart and you won't have to resort to any of the other complex steps.

My Chromebook Screen Is Black And Won't Turn Off

If your Chromebook screen is black and won't turn off, you can wait for the battery to drain completely. When you are sure that the Chromebook has turned off (check the power LED), plug in the power cord and turn it back on. In case, the black screen still persists, there are some other things you can try.

While a hard reset will usually fix the issue, if you’re having an ongoing problem with the dreaded black screen, you can try the troubleshooting tips in the previous section before calling it quits.

What Causes The Chromebook Black Screen Issue?

There are many different reasons why you might be experiencing this. As well as the possible hardware problems that we've previously highlighted, any of the following could also explain what's going on:

  • Dead battery
  • Low brightness
  • An external device causing a conflict between drivers
  • A broken screen

There are other reasons, but these are some of the most common. Try the fixes we suggested above, as these are your best bet for getting that screen back up and running.
