How to fix Apex Legends Engine Error

Luckily for those facing this error, there are various solutions that other Apex players have reported to have had success with.

Here's a selection of fixes to try:

Fix Apex Legends Engine Error with Administrative Privileges

To give Apex Legends administrative access, you need to do the following:

  • Right-click on the Apex Legends icon and select Open File Location.
  • Right-click on the r5apex executable and select Properties.
  • Click on the tab which says Compatibility.
  • Check the Run as Administrator box, then select Apply.
  • Run the game, and see if you have resolved the issue.

Verify game files

  • Open the Origin client and sign in.
  • Click on Game Library
  • In the Game Library, select Apex Legends, right click and choose Repair Game
  • The client will then check all game files. It will identify any missing or corrupted files, and fix or replace them, as appropriate.

Registry settings

  • Right click on the desktop, hover over New and click on Text Document.
  • Enter the following command:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers] "TdrDelay"=hex(b):08,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

  • Then select File and click Save As.
  • Choose file.reg as the file name, All Files as the file type, and click Save.
  • Double click the saved file to open it.
  • A warning message will appear. Select Yes to override it.

These are likely the most effective solutions to resolving the engine error message. If these don't work, then you might need to consider uninstalling and then reinstalling the game entirely.

What is the Apex Legends engine error?

There appear to be four main reasons behind the engine error:

  • Out of date drivers. If you are using an old graphics driver, it may need to be updated in order to remedy the issue.
  • Missing files. We know that Apex Legends is not immune to files becoming corrupted. When this happens, it can prevent the game from loading correctly, causing it to crash.
  • Administrative settings. The game sometimes needs permissions to access specific files, for example. Without these permissions, it can cause the game to crash, or lead to this engine error.
  • Windows registry settings. A missing command line, which is essential to loading the game's graphics, can also cause the game to crash.
