Sony is continuing to work on the often maligned PlayStation 5, adding new features that players have definitely been waiting for. This is one that those who are after that sweet sound will definitely love to have. Let’s find out how to turn on Ps5 Dolby Atmos and take advantage of it.

Games, before this updated, were mostly limited to only using Linear PCM and either Dolby or DTS Bitstream. Of course, Dolby Atmos works okay for movies on Bluray, but up until now it wasn’t working on games.

So if you are a gamer who cares about your sound, you might definitely want to know all about the PS5 Dolby Atmos and how to use it.

How to turn on Dolby Atmos on the PlayStation 5

First thing, you need to make sure that your PlayStation 5 is on the latest software update. Then, here are the steps required to activate Dolby Atmos:

  • Connect your console, TV and soundbar or speakers using HDMI eARC
  • Turn on your PS5
  • Go to Settings - Sound - Audio Output - Audio Format Priority
  • Now, from the menu, select Dolby Atmos

This allows your Ps5 to interpret a Dolby Atmos signal also for games. Keep in mind that, at the time of writing, the feature is only available to those who have opted in to the Ps5 beta software. You can opt-in by clicking here, but be warned that using beta firmware might result in problems running games or watching movies.

Other features in the beta PS5 firmware

In the latest beta firmware, Sony is also adding some interesting UI and tech enhancements. Here are some of the more interesting features that will come with the latest update:

  • It is possible to now turn on haptic feedback effects while navigating your PS5 with your DualSense controller, DualSense Edge controller, or PSVR 2 Sense controller.
  • It is also possible to use a second controller as an assist, basically you can use two controllers to operate your PS5 console as if you were using a single controller.
  • As mentioned before, it is possible to use 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech on all compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs or home theatre systems.

We will keep you updated once these features become available for all users. But we are sure that will happen very soon. In the meantime, check out our other PlayStation 5 guides, such as how to mute the beep sound and how to clean Ps5 controller.
