Despite Minecraft releasing way back in 2011, the sandbox-survival game is still massive to this day, popular no matter which generation you were born in. However, if you're hoping to create a world or a Realm with your friends, you may be wondering whether you can use voice chat.
If you've finally figured out how to update Minecraft and managed to fix low FPS issues in Minecraft, you'll probably be eager to play for a few hours with friends or family. But, before you go plugging in your best gaming headset, here's if the game features voice chat at all.
Does Minecraft have voice chat?
Unfortunately, vanilla (unmodded) Minecraft doesn't have voice chat. While there are a few mods out there that offer in-game voice chat, you'll have to create or play on third-party servers, which is a bit of a stretch for most people. As such, you're limited to Minecraft's only chat function otherwise - text chat.
Alternatively, if you don't mind using a third-party service, you could use Discord for cross play, mobile, or PC, or use each company's party system if you're on Xbox or PlayStation. Unfortunately, your options are very limited if you hoped for in-game voice chat.
Mods like Simple Voice Chat enable you to have proximity chat in the game, letting you speak to your friends when you're close to each other. However, it requires special installation on your private server, which is a whole ordeal to sort out if you're not sure what you're doing.
It's certainly possible for a game to have voice chat regardless of platform. Games like Fortnite are cross-platform, yet have a working in-game voice chat. However, it's up to Mojang to develop and introduce the feature, and since the game is almost 13 years old, we imagine it's not a priority for the company.
