How to update Minecraft, download the Nether update and install the latest content

The latest update, the Nether Update, is here for Minecraft. It brings with it all kinds of exciting new toys to play with and things to learn.

You'll no doubt be more than ready to get stuck into the game right now, but what do you do if your game hasn't updated?

You need to know how to update Minecraft if you want to jump into it with everything available to you.

So, here's what you need to do to update Minecraft on every platform.

How to update Minecraft on PC

There are two different versions of Minecraft on PC. The main one that people play is the Java Edition, which is the one you buy directly from the Minecraft site. This has its very own launcher and usually updates automatically whenever a new update arrives.

If it hasn't though, you can select the arrow on the right of the Play button and then select Latest Release from the menu there.

The other option on PC is via the Windows Store. To update this, open up the store, select the three dots in the top right corner, select Downloads and updates, and then select Get updates.

How to update Minecraft on everything else

Nintendo Switch is nice and easy to update, just try and launch the game and it'll prompt you to download the latest update.

PS4 should update automatically, but if not, you can hover your cursor over the game, hit the Options button, and then select Check for update. On Xbox, it's a little more complex, you need to go to My Apps & Games, select Minecraft, and select More Options. Then choose Manage game & add-ons, then Updates.

Finally, on both iOS and Android, because Minecraft is on everything, maybe even your toaster, you can update the game by searching for it in the App Store or Play Store and it should ask you to download the update if it's not already installed.
