PS5 Prices for Both Models

As you can see in the Twitter post below, one of the biggest retailers in Spain may have leaked the PS5 price, with El Corte Inglés purportedly posting some prices online by accident.

The Standard Edition PS5 will cost £449.99, while in other regions there are prices of €499.99, and $499.99.

Meanwhile, the Digital Edition PS5 will cost £359.99, while in other regions translates to $399.99 and €399.99.

Now that both prices are confirmed, it's not a massive surprise. The consoles were known to be hovering at these price points, and for many who own everything on digital, £359.99 is a great price for the 'Digital Edition'.

For comparison: the Xbox Series X price is confirmed at $499 USD, while the lower-spec Xbox Series S price is $299 USD.

PS5 pre-orders open in UK amid confusion

Following the PS5's price reveal, fans waited for Sony to announce the pre-order date during the event, only for them to reveal a sequel to God of War instead (not that we can complain about that).

Instead it was left up to Geoff Keighley to reveal on Twitter that pre-orders will start on September 17 in the USA, which was later confirmed to be the case in the UK by the official PlayStation UK account.

However, some select retailers instead opened their pre-orders on Wednesday night instead, leaving fans who went to sleep for an early morning of spamming F5 disappointed.

All is not lost for those who didn't manage to pre-order the PS5 just yet, however, as Amazon finally opened its pre-orders at 9 AM BST on September 17 for both the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition.

Everything is still incredibly fluid regarding pre-orders at the moment, meaning that if you click on the link for Amazon pre-orders, you might see that it says 'Currently Unavailable' as the retailer restocks.

Elsewhere, Argos has confirmed that its pre-orders will open on September 18 instead - a day later than other retailers.

All you can do right now is register your interest in pre-ordering a PS5, sign up for notifications, and hope for the best.

Sony comments on the PS5's price

Sony previously made a statement of sorts about the PlayStation 5 price tag, but the company has still not told us an actual price.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sony's Jim Ryan said this: "Recent history has told us that gaming is one of the pastimes, and one of the businesses, that benefits in economically difficult times.... Who knows how this recession is going to look, how deep it will be and how long it will last.

"I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can. I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things.

"In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games... all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform."

PS5 price vs PS4 price - why is it going up?

Since the PS4 price started at £349.99 when the PlayStation 4 first launched in the UK, it's only natural to wonder why the PS5 is more expensive.

Of course, with new iPhones and new laptops retailing for rather a lot of money, people these days are used to the idea forking out for high-end gear.

Inflation also means that your money doesn't go as far these days as it used to. However, there could be more to this steep PS5 price than simple inflation and the changing of the times.

The report continues: "Bloomberg Intelligence’s Matthew Kanterman points to increased component costs pushing up the price required for Sony to break even. Sony has struggled with its price-setting decision for the PS5 because of scarce components, Bloomberg News has reported."

PS5 release date in the UK is confirmed

The PS5 release date has now been nailed down as November 12th for:

  • USA
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

While it is November 19th for 'rest of the world'. There is an asterisk on this date, so there's always a chance that a country gets a later release date, possibly dependant on COVID-19.
