If you are experiencing Modern Warfare 2 crashing, rest assured that this isn't an issue that's exclusive to you, or even to this game. Crashing in video games seems to be a pretty common problem. Recently, we've seen issues with Disney Dreamlight Valley crashes, and Madden 23 crashing.

That's cold comfort when you yearn for the days of bloody warfare, and so on and so forth. Thankfully, we’re here to help you get your boots on the ground.

Modern Warfare 2 crashing is not only irritating, but it has the potential to make a game unplayable. So here are a few of our recommendations, to try and mitigate this issue. There's plenty to cover, so let's get going.

How To Fix Modern Warfare 2 Crashing

As we mentioned above, there are a lot of potentially helpful steps that you can take to reduce or prevent MW2 from crashing. None of them is cast-iron guaranteed though, so there will be a degree of trial and error with these until you find a combo that proves effective for you.

All that being said, these are known to be effective in many cases. So it's worth giving them a try.

Update Graphics Drivers

If you’re experiencing crashes in Modern Wrafare2 or Warzone 2, Activision recommends you make sure you’ve updated to the latest GPU drivers. If you use AMD, you can check for updates here. If you are on NVIDIA, go here. And for Intel, click here.

In case you are still having issues after updating your graphics card, Activision suggests you submit a PC Crash Report to help them identify, investigate, and resolve game crashes.

Currently, there is a specific PC GPU crash issue that is impacting some MWII and Warzone 2 players with NVIDIA graphics cards, according to Activision. InfinityWard is working closely with NVIDIA to identify and fix the issue, so it should be resolved soon.

Look For System and Game Software Updates

Much like outdated graphics drivers, outdated system software can also cause compatibility issues with games. So check for any pending updates, and install them if you see any that are available.

It's a similar story with game updates. Updates are released regularly and are often intended to fix a major problem that has only been identified after the game is released. This is especially true when a game is brand new, or in beta testing.

So check for any game updates, and install these as soon as possible.

Verify the Integrity Of Game Files

Now that MW2 is available on Steam, if this is how you've bought the game, then verifying the integrity of the game files will ensure that none of the files is corrupted. To do this:

  • Right-click on the game from the Library and select Properties from the menu.
  • Select the Local files tab and click Verify integrity of game files...
  • Steam will verify the game's files. This process often takes several minutes, so be patient.

If you are using Battle.Net:

  • Run your Blizzard Battle.net client.
  • Click Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the left pane. Then, click Options and select Scan and Repair from the drop-down menu.
  • Press Begin Scan.

Once you've done this, try launching the game again and see if makes a difference.

Change Texture Setting

Some players have suggested that the issue can be resolved by changing the texture settings on the game. If you've tried everything else on this list, then give this a whirl, and see if it makes any difference.

Other Possible Fixes

If the game is crashing and giving you error messages such as scan and repair, error code 0x00001337, dev error 11557, dev error 6036 or the error code 0x887a0005, we recommend you read the corresponding articles as they have dedicated fixes for the error.

If All Else Fails, Contact Activision

On December 15, Infinity Ward released a fix for MW2 to significantly reduce the number of crashes on all platforms according to the official Trello page. . However, despite this fix, many players are still experiencing crashes

That brings us to our last option, which is to report the issue to Activision via their Support services. And hopefully, if enough people do this, they'll provide a fix sooner rather than later.

Modern Warfare 2 lag and high ping rate are other common issues reported by players. If you encounter any of these, come back here as we have found some working solutions for them.
