Modern Warfare 2 Crashing: How To Fix Modern Warfare 2 Crashing

share to other networks share to twitter share to facebook

If you are experiencing Modern Warfare 2 crashing, rest assured that this isn't an issue that's exclusive to you, or even to this game. Crashing in video games seems to be a pretty common problem. Recently, we've seen issues with Disney Dreamlight Valley crashes, and Madden 23 crashing.

That's cold comfort when you yearn for the days of bloody warfare, and so on and so forth. Thankfully, we’re here to help you get your boots on the ground.

Modern Warfare 2 crashing is not only irritating, but it has the potential to make a game unplayable. So here are a few of our recommendations, to try and mitigate this issue. There's plenty to cover, so let's get going.

How To Fix Modern Warfare 2 Crashing

As we mentioned above, there are a lot of potentially helpful steps that you can take to reduce or prevent MW2 from crashing. None of them is cast-iron guaranteed though, so there will be a degree of trial and error with these, until you find a combo that proves effective for you.

All that being said, these are known to be effective in many cases. So it's worth giving them a try.

Check PC Specifications

First of all, you'll need to make certain that your PC is actually capable of running the game. Activision has listed the system requirements for Modern Warfare 2 as follows:

Minimum Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 470
  • Video memory: 3GB
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage space: 25GB (Beta size)
  • Sound card: DirectX compatible
  • Recommended graphic drivers: Nvidia - 516.79, AMD - 21.9.1

Recommended Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 7 1800X
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580
  • Video memory: 3GB
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage space: 25GB (Beta size)
  • Sound card: DirectX compatible
  • Recommended graphic drivers: Nvidia - 516.79, AMD - 21.9.

In basic terms, if your computer doesn't meet or exceed these requirements, then you're essentially taking a knife to a gunfight. You aren't going to come out of this well. And unless or until you meet those system requirements, you are likely to run into lots of problems trying to run this game.

Close Other Apps

Closely linked to the above, is our suggestion to shut down as many other apps as possible. This will allow your PC to allocate more resources to the game.

If your computer meets the specs for the game, but barely, then having lots of other programs open will increase the risk of Modern Warfare 2 crashing. Closing everything else down reduces the risk of this happening.

Update Graphics Drivers

A common cause for game crashes is outdated graphics drivers. So make sure yours are fully updated. If you use AMD, you can check for updates here. If you are on NVIDIA, go here. And for Intel, click here.

Look For System and Game Software Updates

Much like outdated graphics drivers, outdated system software can also cause compatibility issues with games. So check for any pending updates, and install them if you see any that are available.

It's a similar story with game updates. Updates are released regularly and are often intended to fix a major problem that has only been identified after the game is released. This is especially true when a game is brand new, or in beta testing.

So check for any game updates, and install these as soon as possible.

Verify Integrity Of Game Files

Now that MW2 is available on Steam, if this is how you've bought the game, then verifying the integrity of the game files will ensure that none of the files is corrupted. To do this:

  • Right-click on the game from the Library and select Properties from the menu.
  • Select the Local files tab and click Verify integrity of game files...
  • Steam will verify the game's files. This process often takes several minutes, so be patient.

If you are using Battle.Net:

  • Run your Blizzard client.
  • Click Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the left pane. Then, click Options and select Scan and Repair from the drop-down menu.
  • Press Begin Scan.

Once you've done this, try launching the game again and see if makes a difference.

Change Texture Setting

Some players have suggested that the issue can be resolved by changing the texture settings on the game. If you've tried everything else on this list, then give this a whirl, and see if it makes any difference.

Contact Activision

Last, but not least, is to report the issue to Activision via their Support services. While this won't give you a short-term fix, by reporting the issue and giving them as much detail about when it happens, and what solutions you've tried, you'll help them identify the cause of, and solution to, this problem.

And hopefully, if enough people do this, they'll provide a fix sooner rather than later.

Modern Warfare 2 lag and high ping rate are other common issues reported by players. If you encounter any of these, come back here as we have found some working solutions for them.
