How to update Nintendo Switch firmware: install 10.0.0 for the latest version's new features


The Nintendo Switch has been a huge success since launching in March 2017, but firmware updates have been few and far between.

Thankfully, we recently saw the arrival of Nintendo Switch firmware version 10.0.0 – and it offers more than you might expect.

While we're still hoping for a new version of the Switch hardware - a revamped "Super Switch" with 4K graphics and an SSD would be very welcome - this update to the current model is still pretty great.

How to update Nintendo Switch firmware

Updating to version 10.0.0 is easy enough – when you log into your Switch, go to the settings menu and then the System tab to be able to select the option to update the system.

If that all sounds like too much hard work, you can also just jump onto the eShop on your device – you'll then be prompted to update.

Nintendo Switch firmware update 10.0.0 – what's new?

Accessibility and convenience are the order of the day for the Switch's latest firmware update, as button re-mapping and additional storage flexibility finally arrive.

Players will now be able to remap buttons at a system level on both Joy-Cons and the official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to make it easier to play games that require certain button combinations. You can save five configurations per controller, so you can switch between them depending on the game you're playing.

Another hugely helpful feature is the ability to move games and DLC to and from your internal storage or SD card. That means you'll no longer have to do the awkward juggle between the two – honestly, we're surprised this took three years to find its way to the console, but we'll take it.

You can also bookmark items in the 'News' section of the dashboard, up to three-hundred of them, so you can save items for later, and you'll also find a handful of new player icons from Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
