Having a Gotham Knights local co-op mode feels like a no-brainer. An open-world action RPG set in Gotham City, which gives you the option of playing solo or alongside one other hero, local co-op is surely available. Right, WB Games?

Interest in co-op gaming has not died down, with players asking if many upcoming games support either co-op or cross-play, including Saints Row cross-play, for example.

As for Gotham Knights' local co-op, we have news for you. But you may not like it.

Does Gotham Knights Have Local Multiplayer?

Gotham Knights does not offer a local co-op mode.

In the game FAQs, WB Games writes the following about multiplayer:

Gotham Knights can be played with a friend via the two-player, online cooperative (co-op) mode or enjoyed solo.

And in relation to local co-op specifically:

Co-op mode can only be played online with an internet connection.

This appears to mean couch co-op is not going to be available on Gotham Knights. Which will surely be disappointing news for many. It isn't immediately clear why WB Games has taken this decision, and sadly, it seems that local co-op is increasingly becoming a relic of a bygone era, when online multiplayer wasn't an option.

Given that local co-op isn't an option on Gotham Knights, what multiplayer options are available? We'll cover that next.

What Are The Co-Op Options On Gotham Knights?

You can play Gotham Knights in multiplayer co-op alongside one other person. And to do this, you'll need to have an internet connection.

If you want to play co-op on PlayStation, then you're going to need a PS Plus subscription as well. At least that's according to the PSN Store listing. It's a similar story on Xbox, where you'll need an Xbox Live Gold subscription for online play.

With the absence of local co-op, it would make sense for Gotham Knights to offer cross-play as part of the online co-op mode.

However, in another section of the FAQs, WB Games confirm that:

Cross-play support is not planned at this time.

Now, there is a glimmer of hope in the phrase "at this time". But the reality is that cross-play will not be available at launch for the game. In some respects, this is even more surprising than a lack of local co-op.

After all, Gotham Knights will not be available on PS4 or Xbox One, meaning the focus is solely on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. And there are a lot of games that do offer cross-play amongst these platforms.

Of course, cross-play might be added at a later date. But we certainly wouldn't be holding our breath.

Ultimately, if you do want to explore Gotham City with a companion, you're going to need to use the same platform, and go online to do it.
