The Bonelab OpenXR error is one of a few errors that have been identified since the game was launched, alongside the likes of the Bonelab black screen and Bonelab graphics issues. And it can be a significant problem, with users reporting that when they get this issue, they are unable to launch the game.

In good news, it does seem that this particular problem is one that can be resolved. And relatively easily, too. We'll explain everything you need to know. You'll soon close the OpenXR error.

How to fix the Open XR loader error in Bonelab

Thankfully, this is one error that has already had a solution proffered by Stress Level Zero, the game's developers. In their FAQ's they recommend the following steps:

  • While your VR headset is connected, open SteamVR.
  • Go to SteamVR Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Developer Settings.
  • From here, set SteamVR as the current OpenXR runtime.

This should be sufficient to resolve the issue for the vast majority of players. But on the off chance that it doesn't, then it's worth trying a couple of further steps.

It is possible that some game files might have become corrupted. Your first step is to verify the integrity of the game files. On Steam:

  • Right-click the game in your Library, or click the gear icon from the game's Library page on the far right.
  • From the dropdown menu, select Properties...
  • Select Local Files tab and click the Verify integrity of game files... button
  • Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes, so be patient.

If this doesn't work, then your last resort is to try uninstalling the game and then reinstalling it. This will ensure that you remove any damaged files and that all your settings revert to their defaults.

What is the Bonelab OpenXR error?

The OpenXR error on Bonelab appears to be affecting players who are running the game through SteamVR, as opposed to the Quest 2. You'll know you've encountered this error when you get the message:

OpenXR loader failed to initialise. Please verify your VR headset is connected with the correct XR Runtime.

As we mentioned above, this error prevents players from launching the game. Which means it just sits there, taunting you, tantalisingly close, and yet impossible to reach.

OpenXR is an API standard that provides native access to a range of devices. The error most likely occurs when the wrong OpenXR runtime is selected, as it won't then communicate properly with SteamVR.

Whatever the underlying cause is, the good news is that it is pretty straightforward to remedy. There are some suggestions that this issue may be more prevalent if you are using mods. So make sure you check out our Bonelab Mods guide to make sure you are installing mods properly.
