Years-long Yondu Endgame theory shut down by James Gunn

Marvel is no stranger to going above and beyond to keep their upcoming movies from leaking. However, as Marvel gets sneakier to keep their plans unknown, fans take any hints they can to uncover them. Hence, the Yondu Endgame theory.

The Yondu Endgame theory is a long-running theory that Guardians of the Galaxy actor Michael Rooker was on the Endgame set. This comes after a 2017 post that shows the actor wearing merch for Avengers: Infinity War.

The Yondu Endgame theory

Following the 2017 Instagram post, fans were certain that Yondu would be part of the Infinity War/Endgame movies. However, considering the character was revealed to die at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 just a couple of months later, this was quickly proven false.

However, fans were sure that this meant a Yondu Endgame appearance was planned as soon as the time-travel plot was clear. Needless to say, some believed that this was a deleted scene from the movie. Others thought that James Gunn and Michael Rooker “conspired" to keep Yondu's death in Guardians 2 a secret. Of course, James Gunn has shot down this long-running theory.

James Gunn's response

After a fan accused James Gunn of flying Michael Rooker to the Endgame set to hide his death, the director shut down the rumours. Gunn informed the fan that there was never a Yondu Endgame conspiracy, but instead the actor was working on a different project.

While Avengers: Endgame was filming, Rooker was filming a Disneyland Halloween project on a nearby set. Of course, Disney has many sets on their studios that are used for filming multiple projects at once. There's obviously going to be a lot of crossover.

“No one ever flew Michael Rooker to the Endgame set to hide Yondu's death,” Gunn said. “He did shoot the Halloween skin for the Guardians ride in Disneyland next to the set of IW however, and people ran with it.”

James Gunn has two more Marvel projects in the works. Firstly, Christmas 2022 will see the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Lastly, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release on May 5th, 2023.
