Yu-Gi-Oh! has been around in one form or another for over two decades. The Master Duel iteration though, has been having some problems in relation to jewels. Specifically, problems with a Yu-Gi-Oh! gem purchase error.
If you've found yourself attempting to purchase gems at the gem shop, but being thwarted, you may be wondering what's happening, and why. And that's where we come in, like the most valuable card in the deck, with solutions and answers. No amazing hairstyles or magical powers though. Just answers.
How To Fix Yu-Gi-Oh! Gem Purchase Error
The Yu-Gi-Oh gem purchase error has been affecting players on PC. The solution appears to be to ensure that you have the Steam Overlay enabled for the game. The steps to complete this are as follows:
- Open the Settings menu in Steam.
- Choose the In-Game tab.
- Check the box which says "Enable Steam Overlay while in-game".
- Close Steam and relaunch it.
This, in almost all cases, will remedy the issue. But if you still find yourself having issues despite following these steps, it's probably time to reach out to Konami for further support. You can find their official account on Twitter @YGOMasterDuel, or you can go to the official page and fill in an inquiry form.

What Is The Gem Purchase Error?
The gem purchase error on Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is specifically affecting players on PC, who are playing the game through Steam. You will know when you are impacted by this error because you will see the message, "Purchase has failed". Which, in terms of clarity, isn't especially helpful. The developers have apparently committed to amending this message, to make it clearer. So in future, you may get a message stating something along the lines of "Steam Overlay is not enabled".
As suggested by this proposed change, the underlying cause is linked to the Steam Overlay. Specifically, the Overlay is disabled, which then causes this error to appear. The game is attempting to take you to a purchase menu within that Overlay. So if it's disabled, it can't do this.
The Steam Overlay is part of the Steam user interface, designed to allow users to access things like the friends' list, web browser, chat, and in-game purchases. You'll know whether it is active or not by pressing shift+tab, which will give you access to the overlay. Unless you've previously changed the default settings.

Fortunately, the solution to this issue is as simple as reinstating the Steam Overlay, as we outlined above. Provided you follow these steps correctly, your gem purchasing problems will be a thing of the past.
