Ever since the PlayStation 4 Pro was released over three years ago, customers have been perplexed to be unable to play 4K Blu-ray discs, even though the console has been capable of it.
Now that it's 2020 and we're expecting the PlayStation 5, it does indeed seem that Sony have been waiting to officially announce the new console with 4K Blu-ray features.
But with the rise of streaming and stores still on a scatter of opening across the country due to COVID-19, 4K Blu-ray may only be beneficial for the games.
With that, lets see if 4K Blu-ray discs are indeed able to be played on the PlayStation 5, and if the format will see a resurgence if it is true.
At the Movies
Currently on Netflix the main binge is Unsolved Mysteries; at least it is for me and my circle of friends if Facebook and Twitter is anything to go by. We use an Amazon Fire Stick 4K to access the service, and everything is straightforward.
But we also have a Blu-ray player, which has, to my knowledge anyway, never been used. So now that it's been confirmed that the PlayStation 5 can indeed play 4K Blu-rays, the question is; will you play them?
Let's also not forget that a 'Digital Edition' of the PS5, where there is no disk drive, will render some unable to play any type of disk anyway, so it really depends if you want to have something to play previous Blu-ray movies that are in your movie collection.
Granted, it seems inevitable that 4K Netflix is coming to PS5 as an app, so that can allay any watch-party that someone will have for those who will be owning the 'Digital Edition'.

When you factor in the CPU and GPU for the PlayStation 5, these will be able to easily render any 4K Blu-ray, it's just a matter of what else it could render in the future.
8K is coming in a few years, most probably during the halfway-point of these new consoles, so it wouldn't be a surprise to eventually find out that they already support this standard, but being able to read a film off a storage type like a Blu-ray, will still be tantalising to some, especially if classic movies such as Star Wars and Back to the Future see 8K releases.
For now though, if you are a movie-buff, look into purchasing the PlayStation 5 with a disk drive, and your Blu-ray collection will at least play for now. At least something backwards-compatible from before 2013 will be watchable on the PlayStation 5.
